Pictures

Yes, old family pictures seem to do something to our heart. Years gone by always bring many memories through photos. Mim and I have gone through many old slides and photos. Joey helped me to get these installed on a scrolling screen saver. Every 8 seconds a new old photo. I really like this form of remembrance.

When Perry was in high school, I was probably just starting with Dun & Bradstreet, 300 W. Adams St., Chicago, IL. I roomed at Jay's for a few months and then lived at the Wilson Y for about a year and a half. And March 24, 1957, Mim and I married. (Already, over 10 months have passed since the 50th wedding anniversary!)

I recommend that everyone keep photos and a journal because when a person gets into the 60s and 70s the "look back" seemingly gets very important. The "vapor" becomes very real. I really appreciate the exchange of thoughts on the blog.

old pictures

Happy Birthday, Uncle Lynn!

When these 2 pics were taken, you would have been 22 years old. Where were you at that time of your life? Living at home in Gridley? Chicago?? Dunn & Bradstreet (or was that Uncle Jay?)

A little insight, please.

Here's Uncle Perry as likely a Freshman in high school. I'm posting this without a Release of Liability form from him. Enjoy.

Happy Anniversary

And it obviously follows that if today is Dad's birthday then Mary and Joey have been married 70 years fewer than Dad's age.

Happy Anniversary, Mary and Joey!

Thanks, Rhoda!

So glad you let us know about the birthday! I'll add it to my birthday list. I searched through several e-cards and was very tempted to send one that included some big vultures (I know you have a sense of humor, Uncle Lynn) but I settled for something traditional.
We just had a downpour of rain with some hail included. They are predicting snow so Dave is planning to be out all night with the snow crews.
Take care, all...
Judy

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday, Dad!!!

Love,

Interesting

Note that the family interest has centered around a couple of photos that are from 55 years ago. We could have been into so many other issues: Superbowl, current politics, recipes, Tiger, cars, faith matters, etc., etc. But the focus is family and some family history if only brief.

The family, even if weakened in today's setting, is still God's created unit to strengthen each individual to serve Him. Keep up the family unity!!!

Photo of Grandpa EJ and baby Judy

After much discussion of the original theme-photo for this blog, I am submitting another picture of the same day, same scene. Baby granddaughter Judy, born May 29th of 1952 is sitting on Grandpa's lap. It is possible that Catherine took these pics because she has several from the same roll of the RDK family children. If this pic goes through, upon request I will post one of Uncle Perry at age 14 and a freshman at GHS sitting on this same couch.

A little business to attend to

--I have changed a setting so that anyone can comment instead of just anyone with a Google account (did not realize it was set this way). This should clear up the problems that several have had with posting comments. This does mean that people from outside the blog can comment. If that should become a problem, we may have to limit comments to just people authorized to post. For now, if you do comment without signing in (therefore an "anonymous" comment), please put your name on the comment.

--There is another setting on the blog that can take up to 10 email addresses if you would like to be notified when comments (not posts) are added. If you'd like to have that perk, just let me know.

--I also realized that a couple of family members got left off of the original email. Please know no harm was intended--this middle aged female does not always know if she is coming or going.

--This has really been fun! Thanks for the enthusiastic response this week!

Safe Arrival

We arrived in Tallahassee at Ruth's home at 4:05 ET rather weary of driving for two days. Had a wonderful evening in Decatur - delicious taco soup - thanks L & M. We are looking forward to a nice visit with Ruth and should arrive at our destination in Indian Rocks Beach mid-afternoon tomorrow.

Jerry's leg is managing the trip well although we are both a little stiff when we get out of the car. Not because we're old, probably just a little out of shape!

Ada

The Picture

Yep! You all are right. 1952 is confirmed. Dad is 60. Mother is 50. We have the original and it shows very well a perky mother and dad.

We have a slide (photo picture to be made and submitted) that will explain our thought of 1958. It is somewhat similar to the one of 1952.

Welcome aboard Ada. You and Jerry always have meritorious contributions. I look forward to a nice time on the family blog! (6:24 AM. 1-25-08. Cool 17 degrees.)

More about picture

Hey - just found out about this blog! Jerry and I are at Lynn's tonight- had a delicious dinner and nice visit with Lynn, Mim, Mary and Joey.

My recollection of the picture of Mother and Dad on the couch is that it was taken on his 60th birthday. That would also coincide with the date on the picture since his birthday was Oct 25, 1892, he would have been 60 in 1952 with the picture being developed a week or so later.

That's all I have time for tonight. Hope I'm doing this right and it comes through to the blog!

Ada

COLD TO WARM TO HOT!

Thursday afternoon--3:20. We're expecting Ada and Jerry to arrive any minute enroute to Florida. I just finished reading about sub-sub-temps in the North. It is a pleasant 35 here in the midsection of the midwest. And Florida is maybe not really hot but significantly warmer than here. So they are making a wise journey.

Ann is correct

I'd been having trouble getting in with my password, etc., but now succeeded. I wanted to clarify the date of the picture and even asked my sister Cathy to post this for me, so if a duplicate comes up, please forgive.

The photo from the first week of November 1952. KODAK has printed on the back, "Nov. 3, 1952" on each picture. So Ann is correct in the date -- Nov. 1952. Mom and Dad have a few more pics, in my possession, of the same people, same setting, same faded coloring. In fact, one is of Grandpa holding a very young female baby -- I think Cathy.
Also a good one of a young Perry on the couch, too.

Well, maybe!

I may have to retrench. It doesn't make sense that they would have a 1952 magazine on the coffee table in 1958. Moreover, Dad was not a well man in 1958 and he looks mighty perky in the photo. I'm checking further.

Photo Date

Well, hallelujah !!! We have uncovered the date of the photo of Mother and Dad. I was discussing all this with Mim and she said that she took the picture in 1958--firm. It was originally a slide and she had the photo printed, I would presume at Wal+Mart!

So--here's to MIM!

That LOOK magazine cover

I have way too much to do this afternoon to have taken the time to do this, but . . .that LOOK magazine cover has been consuming me since reading Cathy's post. So I researched on eBay and think that this is it:

I found it on eBay - it is the November 4, 1952 issue, and the woman on the cover is Anita Ekberg. Does this look right? If so, it's not only Grandma's shoes that are a little racy!!! :-)

Quiz comments

I have to agree with the analysis of the couch angle, Uncle Lynn.

If I remember correctly, I believe Perry talked about the long-sleeved, white shirts at the '99 Alabama reunion. That was the acceptable tradition for the men. Just think, long sleeves even in the scorching heat of summer and no a/c. Apparently the women had the right to bear arms, and legs as well.

Since Judy brought up the "racey" shoes, we were wondering if Grandma's shoes were open-toed or close-toed. It's kind of hard to tell.

Any guess on what year the picture was taken? I determined it would have to be between '55 and, of course, Grandpa's death in '60(?). I googled LOOK magazine covers, and it was in '55 that they changed the title to go across the page vs. being in the corner. I could not find a match, though, for the woman on the cover.

We need to get Perry and Ada on here. I'm sure they would have input. I believe my dad, too, would have comments, if able. *sniff*

Well, my coffee break is over. (I really don't spend all day on the net!)

Love to all,
Cathy

Answering CleveKathleen

For some reason, my comment would not be accepted.

1, 2, and 3 may be right. However, I think the couch is at a slight angle with the west wall window drape on the left. Analysis based on the wall paper: Note that the pattern is wider on the left and more narrow to the right. I think the extreme northwest corner of the room is to right rear of the sofa. The sofa would be at an angle. Moreover, I remember, I think, it to be in that position.
My Dad simply always wore a long sleeved shirt and almost always white. Never colored but maybe a thin stripe. I never saw him in a short sleeved shirt or sport shirt.
Although there are several blogs I read regularly, this is my first posting ever! This will be a fun way to stay connected with everyone.

Thanks, Ann!

I'm already enjoying this...thanks, Ann. I failed miserably on the trivia quiz - can't wait to see the answers. Grandma had some pretty "racey" shoes!

Trivia Fun

Hello fellow-Klops!

How 'bout a little trivia quiz? This pertains to the picture of Grandma & Grandpa.

  • Who is on the cover of the LOOK magazine?
  • What is the little round thingy on the coffee table?
  • Which room are they in?
  • Which wall? And is the couch at an angle?
  • Who made the afghan?
  • Is there some sort of history about Grandpa always wearing a long-sleeved white shirt and tie?

Cathy Hohulin

P.S. I don't know the answers.

Price of Gas

Over the weekend the price of gas dropped to $2.87. Yesterday morning on the way to work I thought I'd wait until the way home to get gas since it was about 15 degrees--plus the price of gas doesn't go up on Mondays. On the way home it had jumped to $2.94. At that time it was cold and snowing and I was ready to get home so I thought I'd get gas on the way to work this morning. Wouldn't you know, the price this morning is $3.04!

Out of curiousity, what is the price of gas where you are since we are so spread around the country?

New Grandchild

My daughter, Melissa, gave birth on New Years Eve at 4:16PM to Isabel Margaret. Isabel would be a great-great-granddaughter of Anna and EJK. Ron and I drove from Springfield in a rush to get to Naperville to babysit Melissa's twin boys, Ethan and Noah. We ended up spending New Years Eve at the Comfort Inn in Pontiac because I-55 was just about impassable. We met Isabel about 9:30AM the following morning at Prentice Women's Hospital in downtown Chicago. Everyone is doing fine and Melissa seems to have a special talent for managing twin boys with a new baby. How wonderful to be able to share this news on our family blog.

Two photos of interest

My dad is writing a personal memoir which will be coming out sometime in the near future. It contains a number of photos of family history (hence the picture at the top of the blog); here are a couple more you'll probably appreciate:

Three little boys~~

Storytelling at a reunion in Alabama - 1999?

I have a good one of the "homeplace" from the '60s but am having quite a time getting it uploaded--the file is too large. There are several more but they need some work in converting format first. To come in the future!

Sunday, January 20, 2008

Ann, great idea, and I look forward to keeping up with family in a new way.

I remember Grandma saying in probably the late 80s, "I just can't believe all these people that came from just Grandpa K. and me! Who would have thought."

I always thought there was a point at which it was too cold to snow, but I've learned in the last couple of years that lake effect knows no temperature. It's been 15 or below all weekend, but it's been snowing almost continuously. We have about 8-10 inches on the ground with snow forecasted the next four days.

I'm hunkered down and ready to watch the Pack win hopefully.

Things change so fast!

It's fun to see Grandma and Grandpa K on the Internet. Such an old-looking picture, but not that long ago, really. It shows how fast times change. I wonder what life for my grandchildren will be like when they are my age? I can't imagine. Just as G&G K couldn't imagine the internet. Thank you, Ann, for setting this up. Will be fun to hear from everyone.

It's so cold here right now, we are homebound for the weekend except for church today. I told Jerry, "I've had it with this weather. I'm out of here!" I'm actually going to Duluth for work this week. Will probably be even colder. Days like today, we dream of Florida more than ever.

Well, since the Bears are out of the running, we're temporarily Green Bay fans. Go Pack!

Quiet Saturday

Years and miles dictate a day of peace and quiet! And that's today--Saturday January 19, 2008. How sweet it is. Mim and I had a walk and after 15 minutes, the temp was too much so I quit and she continued for another 15 minutes. I blame the temp; however, it is really the hips arthritis which I must favor significantly.

Oh, yes. I watched Illinois basketball in another fizzle. Y'all have a good day!!!

First Post

Hello to all EJK family members. I talked with a few of you who were enthusiastic about this idea. I've sent out an email about this to as many family members as I was aware of; please forward to any others who may not have been included.

Please feel free to use this as you choose. You can just read from time to time; or, you can contact me at annbailes@bellsouth.net and I will send you an official "invitation" through Blogger to be a contributor. Even then, you only have to post as often as you wish--daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, irregularly. You can also upload pictures, change the color of your posts, and add links.

This is not "my" project--I'm merely the initiator. Please send me suggestions or comments of how this could be improved. I am not a professional and just have fun with this sort of thing. If anyone is interested in also serving as an administrator (not difficult to do) I would be glad to have help with that also.

You can share current family activities from your own family. You can comment. You can reminisce. You can bloviate. You can pontificate. Please, just participate. Thank you from Cousin Ann!
