We had a nice Memorial Day in Gridley in spite of all the rain. It was a special day in honor of Raymond Witzig who died in combat in Viet Nam. Several men from his batallion were present, and gave speeches in his honor. Cleve, a veteran of the Viet Nam War, although not in the same unit as Raymond, was among the honored. Many veterans from other wars were also present and honored. It was very touching. Hope you will enjoy a few pictures.
It was a special day in Gridley and the parade and ceremony were among the best I have attended. The biggest miracle was that the rain held off. It rained all the way from Bloomington to the Mackinaw, and from there to Gridley it began to clear up. There was not a drop of rain during the festivities and the temperature was just right. Thanks for the pictures, Ada, and thanks again for the bouquet on Dad's grave. He would have loved the day's events.
Yes, Angela, that is Kay with a cane! She has a lot of leg problems ever since her "fall" over 20 years ago. Then Bob fell down the steps at their house last week and tore a ligament in his knee and can't put any weight on this leg. He was there in a brace and a wheelchair! He will have surgery tomorrow to repair it.
Also, did you know Sarah is engaged? She's getting married in November. Lila and I are having a small shower for her with her close friends. Don't know details yet.
Nice photos, Nog Blog. I was totally shocked when they read my name to be recognized. There were several other Vietnam vets there also (including your husband), but I think I was mentioned because I was his classmate at G.H.S. and his lifelong good friend.
P.S. In the last photo, behind me is cousin (with goatee) Gaylin Yergler (son of Knute) and another classmate, Tom Hany (son of Bullet).
Two possible corrections, Cleve...Ada posted the great pictures. I know that for sure. And the guy behind you is Kevin, isn't it? He was the Gridley MC of the program. I didn't see Gaylin there.
Thanks for reminding us that it was Ada with the great photography. However, it was definitely Gaylin in the last picture with the white goatee. He marched in the parade also and I spoke with him at the Fellowship Hall festivities. He lives in Indiana, but is an active member of the Gridle Legionaires. Kevin is the Gridley Commander and, yes, he puts the Memorial Day program together every year.
Now I see Gaylin! I was looking at the picture before that...and on second look I don't think that is Kevin either! Oh well...
I thought the Vietnam veterans looked so old, and I said to Jamie, "Dave doesn't look that old does he?" She kind of gave me a, "Well, ummm, uhhh." Ha!

Is that Kay Hock with the cane?
Thanks for sharing the pictures. How neat that Cleve was a part of the festivities as well.

Cleve, you look a lot like your dad in those last two pictures, especially at first glance.
Ann, I agree with you. At first sight I thought he looks just like Ralph. I had never thought that so much before.
All the pictures were great!
