Game Players

One thing I do in the car to pass the time, and to challenge myself, is to look for numbers, similar to the ABC game. I started it a few years ago, and here's the problem. I'm obsessed. And I impose strict rules on myself. I have to start with zero. The numbers of course are found in sequential order, but I have to also speak them in my mind, in order, while my eyes are still on the number. Zero through nine is pretty easy, then it gets harder. I confess that a little bit of Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder comes out and sometimes I have to quit the game in defeat because I make myself start over again and again. (If I'm not sure I remember correctly exactly where I was, I have to back up and that can get me no where pretty fast!)

This game is the extreme, but I find that in any game I play I do not enjoy being real competitive and I will not cheat, unlike many other members of my immediate family...meaning my husband, kids, and grandkids. What about the rest of you...are you cheaters or sticklers when it comes to game playing?

I am not competetive at all. I don't like to play games because I could care less if I win or lose. Sometimes I hope the other person wins because I can tell they care about it more than I do. I think I would cheat, but not to win, just to end the game sooner!

I'm with you, Judy. I've been told I put the "D" in OCD. I won't get into my counting routines...

I'm a stickler. And only competetive at a brain game, but not at a physical competition. Maybe because the boys can beat me in just about everything now.

Sometimes simply to give my memory a workout, I memorize a license plate and see if I remember it the next day.

I enjoy playing games although nobody else in my family does. I do play to win - unless the kids are small then I try to "let" them win but sometimes no matter how hard I try to give them opportunities, they just don't see them. I used to play checkers with my dad, but he never let me win.

My dream is to someday get to ride in the Cash Cab (maybe next winter when we're our East). I plan to use either Drake or Janice for my "mobile shoutout" help. They're the best trivia buffs.

When I was a child and Alice was "big", we always played the alphabet game in the car. She would always finish when I was probably still looking for the J. Never tried numbers.

I love to play games and pretty much a stickler for the rules; however like Angela I've cheated to end a game before (Dominos can take forever to play!) and like Aunt Ada I let my nieces and nephews win. It's nice when they get old enough to play a game for real.

Once playing Don't Break the Ice (a real show of love!) with one of my nephews who still loves to play it, I let him win about 3 of 4 games. Mom looks at me and mouths, "Are you letting him win?" I really appreciated that vote of confidence that I couldn't beat a 4-year old at Don't Break the Ice more than that!

I also played the Alphabet Game with Lindsey quite a bit when we travelled together one summer. Just a month ago I confessed to her that I would go way ahead of her and then quit playing until she caught up and then I'd go way ahead of her. I almost always seemed to get stuck on W, X, or Y intentionally so she could win. Then I'd tell her that she came in next to last and I came in second. What can I say, I'm an aunt who lets them win and then antagaonizes them a bit.

I work I play a guessing game to see how close to the size of a file I can get.

Win at all cost is what I say. Even if the kid is 4 years old. They have to learn the hard facts of loosing and some point. There are some games I am not allowed to play due to my attitude during game play. I've had to apologize before for my attitude while whipping a kid (mine and others) in a "kids" game.

On the other hand, our kids have started the numbers game and follow Grandma's rules to the "T". We play the game every trip North.

Oops I meant losing, not loosing.

I find that loosing and losing are two of the most misspelled words I see. Everywhere. (Does one word make a sentence?)

--Yes, in that case "everywhere" would be one sentence because there is an understood "I have seen that mistake" as part of it. Sometimes in context it's OK. Now, I think that's right--can't say I've looked it up in a manual.

--When you impose strict rules on yourself for the game - For instance, if you're up to 29, and you see a sign for "Gas 2.99/gal, do you count the 29 at the beginning of that? Or do you have to see an exact 29?

$2.99 can only count as a 2 or a 99, but you can't use 2.9 as 29. A number like 367 could be a 3, a 6, a 7, 36, 67, or 367 if you were taking a trip around the world!! I came all the way home from Denver once and only made it to 57, I think it was. Of course, sometimes you have to take a break on a long trip like that, but on short trips around home, I make myself start over each time I get in and out of the car.
