Andrew will be 7 next month so it is time for his special train trip to Kansas City with Grandma. He's all ready to go at the Galesburg Amtrak station and his mom and siblings are seeing him off.
Maria and her children took us to the KC zoo.
Feeding the birds is a special part of the zoo adventure.

Next summer will be Timon and Ellie's turn. Then there are 5 more (at least?) after that. We were gone two nights and one full day with Maria, Brandon and the cousins. After the zoo, was swimming in Emch's pool followed by a special place to eat out. This time it was the T-Rex because Andrew really likes dinosaurs. We had a great time! ---Carol

It's great that you do that. Sounds like you and Andrew had a great time with the Emch's. Loved the pictures.
Carol, that is such a nice memory-maker. And yes, the pictures were very nice. Andrew's excitement in the picture in the train station almost comes off the screen. :-)
Loved seeing Elizabeth and her family in that train station. Very fun! How long of a train ride is it?

(I speak from experience)
The train ride lasts 4 and 1/2 hrs (unless it is late, which often happens---this time we were lucky to have it on time coming and going.) We passed the time in the observation car, sometimes watching the scenery (the Mississippi River is especially pretty) and playing games such as Uno and Dutch Blitz. We also ate breakfast in the dining car on the way home. --- Carol
Carol, when two grandchildren are the same age, do you take two at a time? Also, what do you do with them Emch children - go to KC and bring them back to Illinois?
When Mike and I went to Omaha last summer, we took a side road along the Mississippi, through southern Illinois to Chester (where we crossed - and it was a very pretty bridge & sight). We didn't know until on it that it was a designated scenic route, and it really was beautiful.
**Not "them" Emch children!!! THE children!!! Typo!!! Looks horrible, especially from someone who is teaching English exclusively this year!!!
I did take Anna and Carter together last summer. Anna came with her family for a visit and I took her back on the train with Carter. I might keep it just a one way trip for the Emch's. They get in on all the fun each time a cousin comes, so they don't really "miss out."---Carol

Along the line of THEM children, I always laugh when I hear people say "Good to see you's!" I remember many Gridley-ites saying it when I was growing up & our family still says it just for fun. I even have my Gridley friends saying it!
