We have a Mickey D's modeled after the originals here in town. Anyone wanting to identify it from the others in town always refers to it as the "fifties McDonalds."
Seeing that picture reminds me of the days (in the sixties) when we would drive to Decatur on a Saturday night to the McDonalds there - Athens didn't have one - and each child could order a hamburger and fries. I think we got shakes also. Mom was special - she got a fish filet. Those Saturday nights were a BIG deal.
A real flashback photo. One of the very first McDonald's was in the middle of the ISU campus on Normal's Main Street. A full meal for 35 cents -- hamburger (15 cents), fries, coke (10 cents each). The owner of that franchise retired as a millionaire already by the late 60's, rumor had it. The McDonald's is still there, going strong.
I well remember the Saturday nights trips to Decatur to McDonalds. Our family of six could eat for $3.65. Mark always ordered an "All American": hamburger, fries and milkshake. I also remember going to the very first of their locations in Skokie or the suburb just north of it during lunch time when I worked for G.D. Searle.
