Memorial Day weekend at Cleve & Kathleen's

Great posts lately! Just wanted to share that Crystal and Aaron's family came for 4 days/nights over the Memorial Day weekend and we enjoyed it immensely. On Monday eve, oldest grandson Caleb (8 1/2) and I went Indian artifact hunting and Caleb found a 2,000 year old arrowhead. Being jealous and re-motivated to add to my collection, I gathered my walking stick, hat, sunglasses, and I-Pod of gospel music and went hunting Wednesday afternoon in the same "hot field" and found one of my best ever -- an almost perfect 3.25 inch spearpoint that was made 3,000 - 5,000 years ago. A few minutes later found a 1.5 inch approximately 2,000 year-old arrowhead and an Indian blade (knife). I realize that many people find this hobby a waste of time, but I find it thrilling to find an artifact that's been untouched by another human for thousands of years. Good exercise, too. I'd like to hear of some of your "unusual free-time activities"....

Sounds like you had fun with your family over the weekend. When I first looked at your picture, I thought you were holding two tiny fish from your lake. :) Much more interesting when I read that you were finding ancient arrowheads. How do you determine the date?

Ada: I have a picture identification book which puts each find in one of 4 era's. Based on the shape, material, and location, one can match up the era. Illinois artifacts are mostly from the Woodland Era (1,000 B.C. to 1,000 A.D.) or the Archaic Era (1,000 B.C. to about 4,000 B.C.).

So don't let this turn into a debate on the age of the earth, because nobody was around to take notes at that time. I do know that these artifacts make the Civil War era look like "yesterday" in comparison. And yes, they really were made by Indians.
Thanks for the inquiry.

How to determine the date was my question as well. It's very interesting and great that your grandson shares your enthusiasm.

Thanks for the info. I too was wondering how you knew the date. That's not something you can research on ebay. :-)

Unusual leisure time activities? I don't know - we lead a pretty boring life. Will try to think of something more interesting than comparing prices at the grocery store!!!
