I finally got around to trying Grandma-Great's chocolate cookie recipe. I'm not sure if they turned out like hers, but they sure do taste good! For some reason I remember them being a lot darker brown, where mine turned out light brown and kind of like a gingerbread cookie. Is that right or not? The 7-minute frosting is just heavenly.
So here's a question for all you cooks and tasters as well... what recipe in the blue Klopfenstein cookbook is your favorite and/or do you use the most often? Mine would have to be the Mandarin Orange Salad on p.20 (but I add mini-marshmellows to it). Any other favorites?

I also love the mandarin orange jello salad. It's funny you mention it because I was going to post and ask if the tapioca is available in IL? I can't find it in the major grocery stores here.
It's my standard company dish and I like to put it in a bowl of Grandma K's. There is still a piece of tape with "Anna Klopfenstein" in her writing as I'm sure she used the bowl many times for potlucks, etc.
Shelley - I can imagine the fun you and the boys had making those cookies. Baking was always a fun and messy activity when my kids were little. I also did a lot with the Heather and Kelsie and now have let Nathan "help" me a few times - he loves to crack the eggs! I'm glad your cookies turned out to be delicious.
Rhoda - yes, we have tapioca in IL - at least the last time I looked. I'll send you a box.
Sorry I forgot my favorite recipes. I love the Chocolate Ecstasy (p. 21) from Irma Ebert. I also like the Yummy Sweet Potato Casserole (p79). I use the book often but sometimes vary the recipe slightly to fit my taste.
The most used recipe in our household is Charity's Davy Crockett bars (p. 104). When he was about 10, Andrew discovered that recipe, and he's made them often. Just last summer he made a batch of them to take to a party. He doesn't bake anything else, but he makes a mean Davey Crockett Bar!
Something else about the cookbook - As you remember, the blue book is the 2nd printing; I believe that the first one had bad paper or prongs or some kind of printing mistake - is that right, Aunt Ada? Anyway, Mary Lee was about 6, and I gave her the old copy after the new one arrived. She had asked to have it, and she was so excited to have her own cookbook.
I made the mandarin orange jello salad yesterday for Sunday lunch today. It is good! I have to fix food for a church potluck next Sunday so may make it again then.
I was really in a big cooking mood yesterday so also made the seafood pasta salad recipe across the page from the jello salad. It's pretty good also.
I tried the Mandarin Orange Salad again, this time using lime jello and chopped up pears. Stick with the orange combination - this one didn't have enough "kick." Maybe if I'd used pineapple instead of pears.
Shelley - I hadn't gotten the Klop. recipe book down for awhile, but you got me started on it again. I made my own recipe for chicken pot pie out of it the other day - I've thrown away the original and now can only get it out of there. And today I'm trying the banana bread recipe.
