The Price of Milk

WOW--did I ever get a rude awakening today. For months I've read how the price of dairy is skyrocketing, but I've been able to get a gallon of milk for $2.99 until about a month ago; even then it varied between $3.29 and $3.69. Well, this past week the grocery near our house put milk on sale for $3.08, and I found out why--it was the setup leading to the fall. (Actually the rise.) Because, starting tomorrow, a gallon will be $4.88! Do the rest of you in other areas pay that much for milk? I'm going to have to get Andrew to quit guzzling it, starting tonight!

The price of milk is not bothering us at all! We will buy a half gallon and it will go sour before we drink/use it all.

This could be a very interesting scenario. The huge elevated price may just be to create an artificial panic to sell larger than wanted inventories prior to the announced increase. Let us know what the price is about next Thursday.

The free enterprize system is still the best; yet, there are flaws!

Staci -- Doesn't your daughter drink milk? My doctor tells me Nathan should be drinking only milk, and it's been really hard to do. Who wants to drink milk when it's 90 degrees? He asks for juice, water and pop -- and I don't blame him.

I don't really even pay attention to the price of milk, except to buy whatever brand is the cheapest that week. I try to keep 2% and whole in the house. Whole for Nathan and the other for everyone else. I'll note the price next time I'm at the store.

It's still $1.99 at Aldi's. Retta has been buying several gallons at a time and freezing them. I cannot drink milk cause it causes migraines, but the others do. Not near as much as most families though. EDK

A gallon of milk at Meijers in Normal, IL is $2.77. My kids drink more than their share of milk. So much that our doctor actually told me to limit their milk consumption. I've been trying to push the water and juice. I bougth 8 gallons of milk yesterday and they'll be gone by Friday.

Both my kids have milk sensitivities. Reagan drank soy milk for a while, which was expensive. She refuses to drink it now. We give her calcium fortified juice. Zion is on soy formula, the same Reagan had to drink.

This week Milk is 3 half gallons for $5.00. Not a bad price. We don't drink much milk but use it in other ways---such as sugar-free pudding, on cereal, etc. I love milk and could drink more but it is too fattening. We always buy 1% at Kroger's.

The last I saw at the grocery store (for all you mothers who are super shoppers I won't say how long ago that was), milk was $3.69 a gallon. I typically buy it only when it's on sale for $2.99 or less a gallon. And when it's on sale usually a gallon is cheaper than a half gallon.

It sounds like most of you are getting much better milk prices than we are.

One thing, it's so, so dry here that farmers are having to buy hay even in the summer and it's expensive too from what I've read in the paper. So that may be driving the price up in this area.

Dad - you deserve a shout-out, or a "Thataboy," or a pat on the back, or something! You were exactly right. I stopped by the grocery store today and they've lowered the price to $3.69--still not a great price, but not $4.88 either. It was apparently all artificial to get people to buy last week. That's manipulative on their part, if you ask me.
