Ants!

We have ants here in Eureka. Over the winter we would see some in our bathroom when the weather would get warmer. Finally we called Terminex and they came out and baited outside. With all the rain we've had lately they have been washed out of their nests. Jerime sprayed for weeds all around the house and now they are really thick! This morning I woke up to a nice line marching in from the window, down the wall, to a huge line crawling up into our kitchen garbage! Yuck!

OUCH! I hate those ants. We've had several bouts of them through the years but with spraying and scrubbing, we managed to get rid of them without too much trouble. Our biggest infestation was with boxelder bugs one year in Drake's bedroom -- came in through the window and almost covered his walls and filtered into the other basement rooms in the house. Don't remember how we finally got rid of them, but fought them for quite a while. Good luck in getting rid of your ants. May have to call Terminex back.

I think I'd empty the garbage every night as well. Ask Mary, she has all the tips about ants or at least knows who to ask.

The worst infestation we've had was maggots! One time I left a bag of bird seed on the top shelf of the pantry. This was when we lived in Gridley (in Hortence's house). The pantry had several shelves and was where we kept cereal, snacks and many other things. One day, I noticed a stray piece of "rice" so picked it up to put in the trash. And it squished! Ewww...upon closer inspection, the whole pantry was covered in maggots. The source was the bag of bird seed which was just crawling! Who knew how long they had been there? What if we accidentally ate some! Ugh! Those who know me well know I am a clean freak, and this maggot incident sent me into a weeks-long cleaning binge.

You guys don't have fire ants that far north, do you?

Sometime if I can figure out how to use the camera for a video, I'll make one of disturbing a fire ant nest. A couple of years ago we woke up to about 100 nests in the front yard. They'd all formed overnight! It happens that way occasionally. The nests are huge, the ant stings are very painful, and you've never seen such swarming as in a disturbed hill.

Gotta love the fire ants. Got home tonight and Amber and Chris told me about their field trip today. Amber's highlight of the trip was playing in the creek and getting bit by fire ants. She said they only bothered her a little, but she had about 20 bites on her leg and thigh. We hate fire ants. Think you killed them and they pop up 2 foot over from the old mound.

Thankfully we don't have red fire ants here. Years ago, Jerry was working in Florida and got into a bunch of fire ants. He's allergic to them and ended up in the emergency room!

Speaking of ants----a couple years ago we had carpenter ants. They are HUGE. They would appear from time to time in any room of the house. My carpeting is very light and they would really show up. We finally called Frantz Chemnical from Pekin and they sprayed inside and outside. They said we would find lots of dead ones for about 2 weeks and then they would be gone. They were right. Now we have our house sprayed 3 or 4 times a year. I'm like everyone else--I can't stand those ants.

No problem. You probably hit "enter" twice when you were posting it. Would you like me to delete one of them?
