More Memoria Day...

The two top pictures are possibly Memorial Day, or least a great play day at Grandma's. I also found the picture of Dad and Grandma marked 1987.

I remember the ice cream maker in Grandma's basement and especially the salt sack in the bottom of that cupboard...I snuck into that sack all year long and nibbled on that crunchy salt. I also remember the little kids crying and holding their ears at the gunshots..and all the grade school boys running and grabbing up the gun shells.

To respond to Eric's "comment" Memorial Day at the Knobloch's was usually a good working day for Dave. We usually went to the parade, once in awhile the cemetery, and occasionally a picnic of someone had invited us, but we usually left it open for "planting beans" or some such farming activity. Eric is right, for us at least, Memorial Day had lost its "important holiday" status. Today for sure Dave would be planting beans if the weather would just cooperate. Not a bean in the ground at this point. Just heard that a mini-tornado went through Gridley during the night and Casey is out with the city crew trying to clean the trees out of the cemetery.

There sure was a storm from about 2:30 to 3:30 am. I paced from front to back window and was trying to decide if the loud noise I heard was rumbling thunder or the tornado-freight train sound. I was ready to head for the basement, flashlight in hand, if the sirons started blowing. Jerry slept through it all.

We will be busy today and/or tomorrow cleaning our yard of corn shucks. The long ditch is full of them and they are scattered through the entire yard. We won't complain though after seeing on TV the many houses that are scattered all over.

Where is the picture on the right taken? Is that Cleve on the ground beside me? Judy and Linda with the buggies, right?

In Peoria, we had early a.m. rains, but no winds like Gridley, apparently. Sounded scary from your description.
The picture on the righ is up on
7th Street next to Wilbur Boies' house. Next to you, Ada, is Marty and the buggies are pushed by Judy and ?. Maybe Linda, but looks like Ann. The lower picture is 1987 and is up at the RDK brick homeplace. Larry is in the upper left picture -- a cute child. I think the weed next to Joe Schramm's house is still there today. Readers should remember to click on the picture and it will become enlarged nicely!

It is Ada and Marty in the dirt, and Linda and I with the buggies. The one of Dad and Grandma I always thought was taken in Florida when Grandma went down to spend a couple of weeks with them. The white railing doesn't add up with the Gridley house. But I can't imagine a Florida place being brick like that with no windows behind them (if they are on a blacony.) Could it be Grandma's house on 8th street?

I think, Judy, you're right..Grandma's house up on 8th street. The brick color also matches her home. Playing with Larry is Cathy and David -- all cute kids.

That is really a nice picture of your dad and Grandma. Just the way I like to remember both of them.
