Newspapers

Rhoda made these observations about newspaper reading on her blog.  A lot of K's are news readers - I'd be interested to know what you think.  Do you think print newspapers are on the way out?  If so - is that a good or a bad thing?

I still read the paper every day. I started reading the comics when I was about 8, moved on to Dear Abby and Erma Bombeck at 10, then news at 12. I became a die-hard Cub fan after following Kerry Wood's rookie season in the Sports section. The comics were always on the last page growing up, so to this day I read the paper back to front.

Ethne is now 8 and has started reading the comics every day. It makes me sad to think the daily newspaper might not be around much longer.

I've never been a great newspaper reader. When I worked night shift I got hooked on the Pantagraph crossword and Sudoku puzzles. Well, you can't afford the paper just to do the puzzles. Dave did read the paper, but finally cancelled our subscription and he reads it online. I find it frustrating online. It does bug me when someone says, "Did you see that in the paper?" And of course, I didn't. So I'm not a true Klopfenstein paper reader. I know some of you definitely are.

I love to read newspapers. But with the Internet, they are on the decline. However, local regional dailies could hang on for a long time. I hope all newspapers can survive. I like to read something where I can turn the pages; and I delight in clipping articles and mailing them to loved ones. I do this a lot.

I also like reading something with pages to flip. I recall Ruth wanting to get real letters instead of e-mails.
Perry, re sending newspaper clippings, thank you for sending the clipping on Fairhaven resident, David Kaeb, who is one of the few remaining cousins from my mother's generation. The clipping is an impetus to send him a note.

Newspapers are getting smaller. But much easier to read, by scanning, than trying to read online with all the advertising. Kathleena and I both read the daily paper, but me more thoroughly (looking for names of former students!!!)

I love to read the newspaper also, but I believe it is dying out. It's just no longer the way people get their hard news. It exists now for features, local items, and advertisements.

I think that books in general are eventually going to become obsolete. We're headed toward computer everything. Sorry to sound so negative but I really think paper-based reading is going the way of the Edsel. It will be a shame if/when it happens.

By the way - this has nothing to do with newspapers - but gas was $3.08 today. What is it in the midwest?

Gas in Illinois (larger cities) is right at 3.75. Gridley and ElPaso are almost always 15-cents cheaper (less expensive, that is!). As crude oil crashed for several days before the Memorial Day weekend, Peoria nonetheless raised gas 20-cents on the Wednesday before Memorial Weekend. Then on the following Tuesday, lowered it 30-cents a gallon! Collusion?? Duh!

I read in the paper (I'm linking these thoughts together) that upstate SC has the lowest as prices in the nation right now.

Gas in west Michigan today is $3.47. My dilemma is with half a tank do I fill up or play the game and hope it goes down another 5 cents or so by the end of the week rather than jump 25 cents!
