Old Christmas cards

What do you all do with old Christmas cards? We've made really attractive tray favors in the past, but that's a lot of work. Each favor is different so creativity is the name of the game. Are holiday tray favors for nursing homes and such a thing of the past? I have two years of cards that are too beautiful to toss out but what to do with them?

I grew up during the Great Depression and that combined with the German work and save ethic makes it hard to discard anything that could be recycled.

Sigh. I have bags of old Christmas cards squirreled all over this house. I find them every time closet cleaning time rolls around (in EVERY closet), in the attic, and sometimes it even takes me until the next Christmas to get them out of the basket they're in for the holiday season. A major project, never accomplished to date, is to put all the families together in sequential order. I'll probably never get it done.

So I am NO help with that question.

Usually in about April I finally get the basket, pull out the pictures and put them in a drawer for a later processing (which never happens, look at the card one last time then throw them away. I was not alive to learn the lessons of the Great Depression.

I use them for scrapbooking.

An elderly widow friend of ours makes good use of hers. She cuts them apart and makes a post card out of the half with the picture and hopefully nothing on the back. She uses the blank back to write a note on the left side and the address on the right with a post card stamp. She saves money on postage (and cards) and I admire her thrifty idea. It is fun to receive them from her.

Google "donate Christmas cards" and there are numerous sites that take/want them. Some pay the postage to get them.

I like the postcard idea.

Thanks for the good ideas, Carol and Rhoda.
It seems St Jude's is the big one receiving cards for their kids to remake and sell. $10.00 for ten cards. One website said St. Jude's were over supplied, but many others suggested them. Angela, I'm not a scrapbooker or a facebooker or a twitterer. But I sure do enjoy the blog! Mim
