Confession

When Carol mentioned keeping a special dress in a closet, it reminded me of my younger years sleeping in Aunt Ada's room in the big house. I slept there often when we visited from La Grange. One of my favorite things to do was look through Aunt Ada's closet. She was in college and I was about in 8th grade. I was too afraid to mess much with her dresses, but I did play with her shoes. She was so in to high heels, and I would try on every pair and strut around the room. She had a shoe bag hanging on the inside door of the closet and there were heels of all colors. It was so much fun. Do you remember that bag of shoes, Aunt Ada?

JUDY!! I can't believe you snooped in my closet and had the nerve to wear my shoes! SHAME ON YOU!!

Actually, this was a sweet day-brightener for me as I got up and came in the "office" to check the blog. I certainly remember the shoe bag and the shoes of many colors. Mother always bought me a new pair of shoes to match every new dress. I started wearing the 3-inch "spikes" in 8th grade - had to quit eventually when my feet and back couldn't take it anymore. To this day, I look at the young women and wish I could wear the cute heels they are wearing - but I'm sure I'd fall flat on my face now!!

We did most of our shopping at Livingston's, Pine's, or Rolands on the square in Bloomington. I never shopped by myself until after I was married. Mother was a great shopper. Alice often went along and the two of them kept me well-dressed!

I, too, have memories of being with Ada in her room. I'm picturing the red print wallpaper, a picture on the wall of a old-fashioned cupid, a dark-stained dresser. I can remember Ada getting ready for dates (with Jerry, I presume), shaving her legs and putting on powder. I don't recall dresses and shoes - what I do remember is once in a while she would get her doll off the closet shelf, open the box, and let me hold it for a while. Then it would go back on the shelf. That was a special treat! Is that the same doll that was under your Christmas tree this year?

Cathy, I remember the dark red wallpaper and the cupid also. What I remember most about the upstairs, though, is the big old bathtub in that huge bathroom.

Yes, Cathy - that would've been the doll that I had restored this year. The lady had the wrong size shoes, so she ordered a different pair and I just went to pick them up yesterday - they still don't fit. So . . . the doll may remain shoeless forever.

I guess that room was made for allowing the younger girls to watch the older girls - as I spent many nights watching Alice get ready to go out and wanted to be just like her.

I loved it when any of my nieces spent the night with me. Gloria and I used to take turns scratching each other's backs. We did a lot of giggling, also. Does she ever read this blog?
