Grace has been bouncing off the walls for the last week as she and her fourth grade classmates chose then waited for the arrival of the instruments that they will play in the school band and orchestra. She originally wanted to play the flute but discovered in the tryouts that the violin suited her better. I've posted a video below of her first practice.
Along the lines of Eric's question about your previous jobs, I wanted to ask: what musical instruments do you play (now or in the past)? I played the saxophone and guitar as a kid. Still play the guitar occasionally though not very well.

I can play the piano and that's about it. By the way, my mom forgot to comment on the instruments she has played -- I believe it would be the piano, the clarinet, and the accordion. I remember when I was in about 2nd Grade she came in to my school and played the accordion for the kids. I was both proud and embarrassed at the same time. She and my dad were also in a little talent show with her playing the accordion and him being the monkey - his talent was standing on his head. But that's another post entirely!

Oh, how horrible! I don't remember going to your class, but the monkey thing was pretty funny. It was a Lucile Stoller's house and Eloise had invited our Gridley friends and her Washington, Illinois friends for a dinner and "talent show." The problem was she told us talent show and she told them something to share, like a hobby, or craft. So they brought handmade lace, wooden shelves, a painting, etc. We, on the other hand, did the accordian/monkey show, another couple played their clarinet and trombone, etc. It was a comical, somewhat embarrassing evening.
I am on the road right now (in Kansas City) so I can't see the video, as State Farm blocks that kind of stuff from our computers. But, I'm sure she's as cute as ever! I will look at it when I get home, and will show Nathan. He'll like to see it. I played the clarinet for a few years, but could not still play it today. Heather played the flute, and it was a great experience for us. I miss hearing her practice. It was such a pleasant sound throughout the house. I bought Jerry a violin for Christmas a couple years ago. After a few days of him trying to play it, I actually asked him never to play it again. It made such a horrible noise. Maybe Grace can teach him a few things.
Way to go Grace! At one time I was interested in the violin but never pursued it.
My instruments--I took way more years of piano than I am good, in high school I played the clarinet, and three years ago I began playing handbells which I absolutely love. If the time comes I don't play for my church I will probably look for a community group to play with.
I also have a harmonica that has been sitting on a table for several years as my reminder to learn to play it. I think I don't work at it because I say I can learn music, but I don't really have an ear for it.
I remember the accordian and monkey event as well. Must have been a big discussion when mom and dad got home.
I played the trumpet in school. Nothing else before or after. I remember when Grandpa Ralph started playing the violin. We got to enjoy his music at every family event as part of the "talent" show portion of the evening.

I have played the piano since 3rd grade. Mike has begun playing the violin - he actually started a couple of years ago but his work hours are so irregular that he does not have time to apply himself to it as he would like. Andrew taught himself the guitar about a year and a half ago and loves it. Mary Lee played the piano all through elementary school but we can't get her to touch it now!
